Commonly accepted mechanism:

Crustal plates are thought to be driven by subcrustal convective currents of magma in the asthenosphere/upper mantle.

Due to uneven distribution of heat (generated by radioactive decay of unstable isotopes),rocks turn plastic under great heat and move slowly, upwelling at constructive margins, sinking at destructive margins, dragging the rigid lithosphere or crust.
