The definition of septic tank and cesspool can be found in Building Regulations. In general, both are used for storage the foul water from building.

In general, the capacity of septic tank is designed based on daily foul water discharge rate of building. Also, septic tank is connected to soakway pit.

However, the capacity of cesspool is designed based on the monthly foul water discharge rate of building.

In fact, septic tank and cesspool is adopted while there is NO public foul water drainage network around the lot boundary.

The design of septic tank and cesspool shall be approved by Building Department, Drainage Services Department and Environmental Protection Department.
