If he is quiet
buy he some stationary

If she is quiet
buy she a teddy bear/水晶

care about you're friend
buy something he/she likes
that's the best way!@#@

It really depends. I usually buy a small present according to what my fds like. My best friend loves cosmetic so last year at her birthday, I bought her a nice lip gloss. The gift is important but more important is the birthday card I buy her. I put in my best wishes and all what I want to tell her in the card. She was very touched when she read it.
