Ferrari’s audacity hit a new peak last year when it produced the track-only FXX and subsequently sold it to loyal owners willing to cough up 2.1 million bucks for the honor of joining Ferrari’s ultimate focus group. Problem is, Ferrari only built 29 of them. If you were one of the bummed billionaires who missed the opportunity to own Ferrari’s non-street-legal super-supercar, here’s the next best thing: the Pagani Zonda R.
Based on Pagani’s already stupidly fast Zonda F, which is capable of lapping the Nürburgring in a shocking 7:32 (same as a Porsche Carrera GT) while achieving nearly 1.5 g in some corners, the R shows just how much higher the performance bar can be raised when you throw out the rulebook.
Indeed, the Pagani Zonda R makes no concession to any racing regulation or governmental constriction of any sort. Instead, priority was placed on eliminating unnecessary weight and incorporating aerodynamic and powertrain-related technologies that will help it go even faster than the street-legal Zonda F. Cost was no object, except to the person who has to pay for it. And pay he or she will: The price of the Zonda R is a Bugatti Veyron–like $1.2 million.
At the heart of the Zonda R is a repurposed version of the AMG-sourced V-8 that powers the CLK GTR racer. Producing no fewer than 750 horsepower, the engine features dry-sump lubrication and is mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox. Even more remarkable is Pagani’s claim that the engine can withstand 5000 kilometers (3107 miles) of track-style driving before servicing, a claim we would be happy to verify ourselves.
Compared with the Zonda F, with which it shares but 10 percent of its parts, the wheelbase is about two inches longer. The overall length has grown by about an inch and a half. The monocoque is of carbon fiber. Aero mods include larger air intakes, a reworked rear air diffuser, and a new rear wing. Although driver comfort has been deemphasized, Pagani claims that safety remained a top priority—a good thing considering how much trouble it appears one could get into with this car, whether or not you’re simply flogging around a track or actually racing against someone.
Which brings up an interesting thought: The Zonda R is intended to be a solo special, but we’re sure that someone, somewhere will try to find out just how the Zonda R would fare head-to-head against an FXX. If that’s you, we have only one thing to say: Don’t do it on PCH.
