Less inhibited maybe? Mentally careless and thoughtless?

it's not really that.. i believe in Gardner's theory of intelligence where we all have different levels of different types of intelligence. The mean people have low emotional Intelligence, where they don't understand people and feelings very well. The people i think you're referring to though, are book smart.people ..not achievement smarts (like Donald Trump)... book smart people tend to have a better grasp on purpose in life and thus understand people better, being nicer... but yes some not-so-book-smart people can in fact have high emotional intelligence...where they are nice and thoughtful..

I'm in my mid-50s and have worked with "smart" people most of my life -- doctors (MDs and PhDs), attorneys, engineers, etc. A number of them were members of Mensa. Based on my experience, I have to disagree with your assessment. Many of the "smart" people I have known were incredibly cruel, vicious and mean-spirited. Their behavior usually stemmed from their arrogance, their assessment that they were better than the rest of us and that they were not bound by the rules of civility.

From my experience, it's the other way around.

Because smart people understand what they're working with.

Well, smart people know how to hide it better. So called "stupid people" just say it how they see it. Don't forget that sarcasm is an "intelligent " person's weapon, and can be just as hurtful.

First off, let me say that I know a LOT of smart mean people. I think people fall into four basic categories.

1. Stupid and nice (think of a big, dumb guy who's a big teddy bear).

2. Stupid and mean (think of of anyone you've ever seen on Springer, Montel, etc.).

3. Smart and nice (the creme de la creme... you and me??)

4. Smart and mean (passive agrressive, manipulative, caniving... some politicians, business people, etc.)

Of course, there are varying degrees of each. And stupid people who are mean tend to be more crass (swearing, violent, etc) and smart people tend to be more passive aggressive and manipulative, which can be even more dangerous.

I don't know about stupid people in particular, but people who have characteristics that society dislikes or does not value often feel the need to attack others to stay in society's good graces. To use an analogy to nature, in a wolf pack the weakest member is taken out by another low-ranking member, not by the alpha.

because the *stupid* people that you refer to feel that their ego has been attacked, and they need to defend it - that's actually a weakness. Real smart people don't brag about their intelligence but instead of proving their capabilities by actions. So, what is your definition of smart and stupid people?

....thats an opinion buddy......of course not all "stupid" people are nice but there still are nice stupid people... all you need to do is find the line between nice and mean and then figure out what triggers a nice responses and what triggers the bad one (thats how you find the line).....this of course depends on the "stupid" persons perspectives..... you also have to remember that there are alot of mean stuck up smart people in this world... but of course that also an opinion....(a rather arrogant opinion if you ask me)

Because smart people know how to "kill 'em with kindness"
not meanness...
