P = Price
E = Earning

P.E = Price to Earning ratio; the earning ability to the current price.

Simply speaking, it is used to judge if the stock is expensive or cheap to buy. If the P.E. = 18, meaning if you buy the stock at today's price, you have to wait 18 years to gain 100% in return (provided that the condition of the company is the same throughout 18 years). If P.E. = 5, meaning you just need to wait for 5 years to gain 100% profit.
