The Housemaid’s Letter
(女傭的信)

Dear Mum,
(親愛的女主人)

I have a room in the roof
(我有一間在屋頂的房)
Painted blue as a blackbird’s egg
(它的藍就像一隻山鳥蛋一樣)
And a whole bed to myself,
(我的一張床)
Which is lonely
(是很孤獨的)
But so clean
(但非常潔淨)
The sheets crackle like morning frost
(那床單皺得像清晨的霜)

I am happy enough, Mum.
(主人，我恨快樂)
The food is good
(那些食物很好吃)
Though swallowed in silence.
(即使我靜靜的吞)
The other girls smile
(其他的女孩也臉帶笑容)
At my clumsy ways
(在笨拙的我來說)
And Cook can be kind
(廚師可以很好人)
If the milk is sweet
(如果牛奶是甜的)
And the butter cool
(那牛油是冷的)
