So they are in mutualism (both of them benefited) relationship.Acacia plant has a hard-shelled fruit and is full of thorns. Therefore, it provides a living habitat for the ants and protects the ants from being attacked (because of the thorns). The ants benefit from these.
The ants' tails can sting. So they can protect the plant from being attacked.
As they both benefit from each other, so they co-exist for a long time and it works so well for them.

The cocktailed ants defend the whistling thorn acacia by fending off other insects and even some animals, in return the whistling thorn acacia plant secretes nutrious drops of liquid as a reward for the cocktailed ants, and a home for the ants to live in.
