In Japanese “badtz” (batsu) is a term for X, the cross signifying a wrong answer. “Maru” is a term for O, or a correct answer. So, Badtz Maru not only means “bad penguin;” it is also a pun that means “wrong-correct,” and is frequently represented by “XO”. Indeed, with his friends Pandaba(熊貓妹)and Hana Maru(海豹花丸子), Badtz runs the mischievous XO clan.

從以上英文可見，所謂X.O.其實是他本名Badtz Maru 的符號表示法。


【Badtz】本為日文中的バツイチ(“batsu”)，在日文意思中就是指圈圈叉叉中的叉;如果用符號表示“叉”，大家都可以意會到會用“X”來表示


至於【Maru】本為日文中的まる，在日文中就是圓圈的意思;日語漢字表達法為『丸』字。它另可指結合各種食材於一身做成精緻味美的丸子;亦可用於男性名字中，如日本故事中的牛若丸(歷史真實人物源賴朝之侄--源義經的幼名，野史中指曾於橋上打敗勇猛的破戒僧人武藏坊弁慶，將之收為部下，成就了一段日本家喻戶曉的歷史故事。)
