1.A rectangle 36cm by 84cm is to be covered with squares which are are of the same size.Find the largest size of the squares that can be used to exactly cover the rectangle.


2.A rectangular metallic bar of dimensions 4m x 6m x 8m is melted and recast into a solid with uniform cross-section.If the cross-section area of the solid is 12㎡,find its length.

36 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 3
84 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 7
HCF of 36 and 84
= 2 x 2 x 3
= 12
the largest size of the squares that can be used to exactly cover the rectangle = 12cm x 12 cm

2. Volume of rectangular metallic bar of dimensions 4m x 6m x 8m
= 4 x 6 x 8
= 192 m2
Length of teh recast solid
= 192 ÷ 12
= 16m

In question 1,no. of squares alone the 36cm side = 3no. of squares alone the 84cm side = 7so, 21 (3 x 7) squares are used to cover the rectangle.The area of each square (12cm x 12cm ) = 144cm²
