Permanganate ion has the formula MnO4-, and is purple in colour. Since the oxidation number of Mn in permanganate ion is +7, permanganate ion is also known as manganate(VII) ion.
Manganate ion has the formula MnO42-, and is green in colour. Since the oxidation number of Mn in manganate ion is +6, manganate ion is also known as manganate(VI) ion. MnO42- ion is only stable in strongly alkaline media, and it is included in AL syllabus.
