The bigger square in the figure is made up of 4 indentical rectangles and a smaller square. The areas of the bigger and smaller squares are 49cm2 and 4cm2 .
Find the width of one rectangle.

Area of the bigger square ACEG = 49cm2
so AG = 7cm

Area of the smaller square IJKL = 4cm2
so IJ = IL = 2cm

AHLB, BIDC, DJFE and KFGH are the identical rectangles.
so BI = KF

Let BI = x cm
BI + IL + KF = 7 cm
x + 2 + x = 7
2x = 5
x = 2.5

so the width of one rectangle = BI = 2.5 cm
