Breakthrough bleeding is the most common side effect of hormonal contraception. Factors which increase the incidence of breakthrough bleeding include noncompliance, taking a low dose oral contraceptive pill at a different time each day, use of medications that alter the metabolism of sex steroids, and use of progestin-only contraception. Stress, eating disorders and intense exercise alter menses. Knowing your previous menstrual cycle length and flow etc is pre-requisite for knowing the reason for you.
