We should conserve our heritage with reasonable consideration, since they are part of our past, for example in the recent Queen’s pier demonstration, a group of young people decided to stop the government to demolish the pier for the new road construction. We certainly appreciate their efforts that they do care about this old pier, however, if the pier remains in place, the whole road project cannot continue which will result the construction company to sue the government for damage claim for delay construction, the traffic in Central will continue to become worsen.
Therefore, it is necessary to consider whether the benefit will outweighs the protection of the heritage asset. In this case, the pier seems to have historic meaning for the colonial past, that it is the first place for Royal members from London or Governors arrives in Hong Kong, as we know this is all history that will not happen again, that is the reason for those young people to organize a demonstration to protect the pier.
If the pier remain at its current place, it will have no obvious benefit, other than remember the past and take a few photos by tourists, but we certainly are and will continue to feel the worst traffic in Central area, cars just not moving in Central or move in very slow speed. On the other hand, if the pier get demolish, the traffic in Central will be better off, since the new road will divert traffic to that road instead. Therefore, it is necessary to have a reasonable consideration between conserve our heritage and benefit it has.
