Located at the estuary of Zhu Jiang / Pearl River,Tai O's faces a sea where the river's freshwater mixes with seawater. The neighboring fishing area outside Zhu Jiang's exit gives Tai O an abundance of marine products and the Chinese White Dolphins a home. Fishermen are experienced and well versed in ocean ecology, for example, the tides, fishing seasons, reproductive cycles of various marine lives and the conservation of rare sea animals.
The northwest coast of Tai O presents a natural rocky shore, boasting the General Rock at the west end and the ocean-erosion platform further down the road from the Po Chue Tam at the east. The coastline that stretches to San Shek Wan makes up Lantau Island's northeast coastal landscape, which is an ideal place for study of the geographical feature.
The mudflats of Lantau Island are key wetlands other than Mai Po. With the development at Tung Chung, the Tai O mudflat has become more important. Worsening pollutions in Deep Bay and the housing estates surrounding Mai Po Reserves has attributed to the 30% drop in bird counts at Mai Po in recent winters. The well-conserved wetlands on Lantau are great stopover sites for migrating birds.
