q.1 the time taken by a train to go from station A to stationB is 3 minutes 49 seconds. express this time in
(a)minutes, correct to 2 significant figures,
(b)seconds , correct to 2 significant figures.

q.2 the time required for an anti-virus software to scan all the files of the computer is measured by a programmer to be 19 minutes 15 seconds, correct to the nearest 5 second. find the percentage error of the measured time correct to 2 significant figures.

1a. 3 minutes 49 seconds
=(3 + 49/60) minutes
= 3.81666666666... minutes
= 3.8 minutes (corr. to 2 sig. fig.)

1b. 3 minutes 49 seconds
= (3x60 + 49) seconds
= 229 seconds
= 230 seconds (corr. to 2 sig. fig.)


2. 19 minutes 15 seconds
= (19 x 60 + 15) seconds
= 1155 seconds

Maximum absolute error
= 5 seconds / 2
= 2.5 seconds

So percentage error
= 2.5 / 1155 x 100%
= 0.216450216 %
= 0.22% (corr. to 2 sig. fig.)
