According to Fiedler, leadership effectivenss depends on the match betweeen the leader's style and the situation. If the leader's style matches the situation, the leader will be effective. If the leader's style does not match the situation, the leader will not be effective. There are two leader's styles - task-motivated and relationship-motivated.
Task-motivated leaders
- are motivated by accomplishment of tasks
- focus on the task first
- can be hard with failing employees
- consider competence of employees to be key trait
- enjoy details
Relationship-motivated leaders
- are motivated by interpersonal relationship
- focus on people first
- like to please others
- consider loyalty of employees to be key trait

In daily management,
(1) Leaders must understand their style and the situation to predict how effective they will be.
(2) Leaders should focus on changing the situation to match their style instead of trying to change how they act.
(3) Good relationship with followers is important to a leader's ability to lead and it can compensate for lack of power.
(4) Leaders can compensate for ambiguity of tasks by getting training and experience.
