火車路軌旁邊的石頭叫做道碴。
在鐵路系統中，「道碴」指用作承托路軌枕木的碎石，是較早期出現及常見的軌道道床結構。工程會在鋪設路軌之前，先在路基鋪上一層碎石，再加以壓實，然後才鋪上枕木及路軌。
使用道碴的好處，在於排水容易及容易調校路軌位置，同時由於道碴把列車及路軌重量分散在路基上，減少列車震動及噪音，令乘客舒適度增加。
由於道碴不及混凝土堅固，道碴軌道會受持續行經列車所產生的壓力而移位，因此需要定期校正軌道位置。另外，道碴的高排水能力亦會使軌道周圍滋生雜草，使其保養成本也較高。
道碴軌道多會在露天的區段中使用，由於在隧道、橋樑區段的空間有限，在這些地方鋪設道碴會更困難，維修成本也會更高，因此這些區段會使用無碴路軌。另外，如果軌道用作運行高速鐵路，車輛經過時對道碴也會有較大的損耗，因此也出現了針對高鐵而設的無碴路軌。中國的遂渝鐵路建有全國首條高鐵無碴軌道。

Secondly, these stones can reduce the noise and vibration. Besides, it can help to prevent water staying at the track area during raining. The stone helps to spread the rainwater into the area beside the track.

Although KCR and MTR are also train system. But, MTR has frequency schedule and as it's located underwater and difficult and expensive to repair, so the engineer decided to use the cement instead of the stones.
