The hand-washing/scrubbing part takes about 5 minutes only, not half an hour like you said. Some hospitals now has rub-on, water-less scrubbing method which even shortens the time to 2-3 minutes.

There are usually more than 1 surgeon present at the operation, so in case one has to leave the operating room, the surgery can still continue.
