ARE you sure your DVD burner is DVD RAM (ie. DVD-RAM) ?
if yes, then normal DVD +/- R, RW may not work on your burner.
can your DVD drive read CDs and DVDs ?
what is the brand of your DVD hardware drive ?
**** pls check and advise the above ****
for every DVD or CD rewriter, they have a fireware inside to recognize the disc you are inserting into.
i have the same experience that my Lite-opn 8x DVD writer cannot recognize a blank DVD+/-RW disc from Mitsubihi (a good brand already).
i guess you have this similar problem as i do.
to isolate the problem, try to burn onto CD disc (CD-R or CD-RW) first. make sure the laser head is okay with your burner.
if okay, then it is likely your burner works okay.
next try to burn on DVD-R or DVD+R blank disc. try Verbatum or Imation disc. if okay, then try Imation DVD +/- RW, as most burner is compatible with Imation.
if the above is okay, then only your current DVD disc is not compatbile.
if the above all fails, probably you need to call HP support. Their after-sales services is quite good as I heard of.
