Does an elastic string gain elastic potential energy when it is compressed or stretched?

YES~
Elastic potential energy is the energy stored in an elastic object when it is compressed or
stretched,compress and bent .
When an arrow is shot ,part of the elastic potential energy of the bowstring is changed into the kinetic
energy of the arrow.
The elastic potential energy stored in an object depends on its materials and the extent to which it is
deformed.
