For those you said that I know but i would like to ask how can I get the information? As most of people know that the salary range gets in the advertisement channels like JobsDB which is a gerenal information. So I would like to ask how can I get the depth information? Thanks!

In order to attract and retain quality staff, many organisations want to know their pay levels compared with others in the market. They do this by taking part in a pay survey among companies within the same industry. For example, you may have Hong Kong Bank, Hang Seng Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, Citibank...etc participating in a pay survey of the banking industry. You may have CSL, Smartone, Sunday, Peoples...etc participating in a pay survey of the mobile phone network industry.

However, they do not compare the pay levels of all jobs in their organisations because there may be hundreds of different jobs in each organisation. They usually select and agree with a list of standard jobs with standard profile job descriptions to be surveyed. These are known as benchmark jobs. Suppose Programmer is one of the benchmark jobs and its profile job description could be as simple as a degree plus 2 years of experience. In the pay survey, the HR representative of an organisation meets with HR representatives of other organisations. If any one finds the profile job description of Programmer in his/her organisation is exactly a degree plus 2 years of experience, then he/she exchanges the salary information of Programmer with others who match. Otherwise, no salary information will be exchanged. Take another example. Suppose Administrative Assistant is another benchmark job and its profile job description is Form 7 plus 5 years of experience. Then any organisation whose profile job description of Administrative Assistant matches with this exchanges salary information with others who match too.

Up to now, you have completed the survey of 2 benchmark jobs. HR representatives of all participating companies will proceed with the entire pay survey by matching the benchmark jobs one by one, then exchanging pay information where appropriate.

At the end of the pay survey, each organisation knows the pay levels of the benchmark jobs of other organisations. Comparing these with itself, it can make an informed decision whether any salary adjustment is necessary and by how much.

Benefits survey is conducted in a similar way as above. Organisations compare their benefits package with others from the same industry. A benefis package may include medical benefits, dental benefits, housing benefits, retirement scheme, and so forth. Since benefits packages for junior staff, supervisory staff, managerial staff and directorate staff may differ a great deal, it makes better sense for organistions to compare benefits packages for the same grade of staff.

The only way is for you (or your organisation) to take part in a salary survey. In exchanging salary information with one another, you will obtain accurate salary information of other organisations.

Alternatively, you may purchase salary survey reports from the HK Institute of Human Resource Management or other consultants. These reports are very comprehensive and provide detailed information about salary levels in the market.
