There are no regulations prohibiting passengers to wear jeans on board.
However, the myth of no jeans came from "standby upgrade" passengers and "employee travel". Which the check-in staff will decide who to upgrade to issue boarding pass for business / first class.

For paid passengers, they can wear any "reasonable" clothing on board (not offending other passengers, or unappropriate clothing).
For stand-by upgrade and employee standby passengers. The company will prefer "business casual" dressing to travel, due to company image.

Thanks grey. I've heard this when I was interviewing CX for Cadet Pilot. But havn't really seen it executed. I believe this wasn't enforced as strict in the states as in Asia. I've seen off duty pilots dressing really sloppy and board the flight. sigh***
