Which of the following methods is the most suitable for preparing a sample of PbSO4?
(a) Adding lead to dilute H2SO4
(b) Adding lead to Cu2SO4 solution
(c) Adding PbO to dilute H2SO4
(d) Adding Pb(NO3)2 to dilute H2SO4

please explain briefly.

Ans : D

As you know, PbSO4 is an insoluble salt and the way to prepare it is to find two aqueous solutions, one containing the cation and the other contain the anion of the salt.

In A and B, lead is a solid, so the requirement is not fulfilled.

For C, lead oxide is a solid and again, the method is not applicable.

So, only D meets the requirement which both Pb( NO3 )2 and H2SO4 are aqueous solutions.

Pb2+ + SO42- --- > PbSO4

PbSO4 can then be separated out by filtration.

Sorry, it should be lead (II) oxide but not lead oxide, the (II) is very important.
