英文字尾..

你是說suffix吧？

英文中其實有很多這樣的「字尾」結構，正式中文名稱為「後綴」，跟prefix[字首]相對。

其實在一般的英文字典的附錄頁裡，都有解釋常見prefix和suffix字綴的解釋。

最方便直接的方法就是到Yahoo!字典查找：http://hk.dictionary.yahoo.com/

我們會用連字號[ hyphen ("-") ]來表示這些字綴，例如：

字尾ious會寫成"-ious"；字首anti則會寫成"anti-"。

在你上述的5個英文字尾當中，右邊數起的第一個和第五個並不是正確的後綴。

第一個-tary應省去t，即為"-ary"；第五個-tal則為"-al".

Yahoo!字典中的釋義：

1.) -ary

suf.
1. (形容詞字尾)表示"與...有關的","...的"
2. (名詞字尾)表示"與...有關的人","與...有關之物","...的地方","從事...的人"

2.) -ious

suf.
1. 表示"有...特性","充滿..."

3.) -ment

suf.(附在動詞之後形成名詞)
1. 表示"結果","產物"
2. 表示"方法"(如:escapement)
3. 表示"行為","過程"(如:impressment)
4. 表示"狀態"(如:enchantment)

4.) -ion

suf.
1. (構成名詞)表示"行為","行為的狀態(或結果)"(如:confession, election, several volcanic eruptions數次火山爆發)

5.) -al

suf.
1. (構成形容詞)表示"...的","關於...的"(如:mental, unequal)
2. (構成名詞)表示"動作","過程","狀態"(如:dismissal, recital)

Prefix usually is placed at the beginning of the word to modify or change its meaning.

e.g. anti- (防止): anti-war, anti-pollution
e.g. auto- (自動): automatic, autoanalyzer

Suffix usually is placed at the end of the word to indicate the part of speech of the word.

e.g. -ly (adverb 副詞): quickly, beautifully, loudly

呢ｄ叫做 suffixes，往往可以話你知字詞o既詞性（part of speech）。常見o既 suffixes 有：
名詞：-ment / -ion / - ance / -ence / -ity、講人o既 -er / -ee / -or / -ist 、講思想o既 -ism、講 quality （形容詞o既名詞形式）o既 -ness / -ty
動詞：-ize / -ise / -ify / -ate（往往譯作 xx 化，即該動作令某事物變成 xx 咁樣）
形容詞： 講有某能力o既 -able / -ible ；講有某特質o既 -ful / -ious / -ous / -ive；講冇某特質o既 -less ；仲有 -al/-ial / -ant
副詞：(-ial)ly / (-ful)ly / (-ab/ib)ly ，都係 ly 尾居多。
但留意，-ly 尾唔一定係 adverb，如 godly, fatherly, motherly 等都係形容詞；而 -ive 尾可以係名詞，如 directive, elective。

呢ｄ suffixes 同佢地o既相反 prefixes（即如 con- / un- 等放於字前o既部份）好多都同拉丁文有關。
