[Fury over jail term for drunk driver, Judge hands down 18-month sentence for man who caused 2 deaths in accident]
by Helen Wu Jun 28, 2007
Bereaved family members reacted with grief and anger yesterday after a man who admitted causing the deaths of two people while drink-driving was jailed for 18 months.
Cries of, "It's ridiculous. Only nine months in jail for a human life", rang out from the public gallery where friends and family of the deceased were sitting when Leung Ka-keung, 29, was sentenced.
Legislators also called for heavier penalties in such cases, saying the deterrent effect was insufficient.
>>下面開始講單意外:
On May 21 last year, Leung's car crashed head-on with a taxi in Wylie Road, Yau Ma Tei, killing the driver, Lau Pui-kwong and his 29-year-old passenger Wong Wai-yin.
Leung, who said he had drunk two cans of beer at a party, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and driving with a breath-alcohol concentration over the legal limit.
Wong's younger brother, who was also passenger in the taxi, said yesterday the family would look into whether they could appeal against the sentence.
"My sister was only 29 when she died," he said without giving his full name. "We are of course upset about the ruling. We will see if we can appeal against it."
Leung was also disqualified from driving for five years and nine months and fined HK$4,000.
Deputy Magistrate Raymond Wong Kwok-fai said in Kowloon City Court that Leung had shown a "selfish disregard for the safety of other road users" and brought "irremovable pain" to two families.
"From the extent that the vehicles were destroyed, it could be seen that Leung's car was being driven at high speed," he said, noting that Leung's breath-alcohol level was 72mg, 50mg over the limit.
Imposing the 18-month term, Mr Wong said he had given Leung a one-third reduction for his guilty plea.
