It must be a glitch - I recommend to call Onkyo support.

I had the same problem with Toshiba HD-XA1 - if TV is off, or the HDMI switch is on dirrefent position - DVD player would freeze!!!!

It was later fixed with software updates.

Keep me posted on this one - I am planning to buy on of the new Onkyo receivers or Integra processors soon...

strategies a million. No offence in this answer besides the shown fact that that's that some wires or kit may be too previous. it must be the DVD participant from what I study on what you pronounced. 2. make optimistic all your wires are plugged in nicely, no uncovered cord is rubbing against yet another(meaning cord without the plastic coat), and to make optimistic your television is on the main suitable channel/source. P.S. those strategies all labored for me

I just setup one of these receivers for a customer and I recall seeing some settings in the receiver related to HDMI audio and whether you want it to pass the audio through to the TV, so you may want to go through all the settings and check that stuff! Also, with HDMI in addition to it handling Digital Video & Digital Audio, it also has DATA for handshaking between devices so it may be cutting audio when it can't communicate with the destination device when it's off (your TV). You may want to contact Onkyo tech support too if you can't figure it out...

I suppose before you get the fix, you could run an additional optical from DVD to your Onkyo.
