牙刷的功用是清除牙齒表面的牙菌膜

除了牙刷外,牙膏也非常重要,以下是牙膏的種類:

含氟化物牙膏
牙膏內含有Sodium Fluoride (NaF), Monofluorophosphate (MFP2) 或 Stannous Fluoride (SnF2)都屬含氟化物牙膏，氟化物含量大約1,000 ppm (百萬份之一千)，能有效地防止蛀牙。兒童氟化物牙膏的含氟量是500 ppm，帶有味道如果味、糖味，適合兒童使用。

防敏感牙膏
這類牙膏能有助封閉牙齒外露了的象牙質(例如刷蝕的牙根)內的微細管道，減低牙齒敏感的程度。不同牌子含不同的化學成分，例如Potassium Nitrate, Strontium Chloride 或Hydroxyapaptite。由於防敏感牙膏不能代替普通牙膏長期使用，使用前應先徵詢牙科醫生的意見。

防牙石牙膏
這類牙膏聲稱能阻礙牙菌膜鈣化，從而減低牙石形成的速度，主要成分有Pyrophosphate或Zinc Citrate。

防牙菌膜牙膏
這類牙膏可抑制牙菌膜積聚，削弱細菌所產生的毒素對牙周組織的刺激，減少引致牙周病的機會。市面上的防牙菌膜牙膏含有不同的防牙菌膜主要成分，例如Triclosan, Zinc Citrate。

美白牙膏
這類牙膏含比較粗糙的微粒，作用是磨去牙齒表面的牙漬，從而得到漂白牙齒的效果。不過長期使用這些牙膏會令牙齒表面粗糙，最終令牙漬更容易沉積在牙齒上。

必須選擇含有氟化物（fluoride）的牙膏來刷牙，因為氟化物能有效幫助防止蛀牙。

兒童必須選用兒童氟化物牙膏，因含氟量比較低，可避免他們誤吞過量氟化物。

在牙齒敏感時才需要使用防敏感牙膏，並且只可用一段短時期。因此，使用前應先徵詢牙科醫生的意見。

要得到牙科醫生的建議和監察下才可使用美白牙膏。長期使用美白牙膏會令牙齒表面變得粗糙，讓牙漬更容易沉積在牙齒表面。

每次刷牙時使用一粒青豆般分量的含氟化物牙膏便足夠。
當牙齒表面的礦物質流失，牙洞還沒有形成，適量的氟化物能加速補充流失了的礦物質，令初期蛀牙得以修復。

鞏固牙齒，加強牙齒抵抗酸素侵害的能力。

抑制牙菌膜的滋長，削弱細菌產生酸素的能力。

牙刷的功用:
1. 刷牙。牙刷的主要功能,是也。

2. 刷鞋。皮鞋醮上鞋膏後,用牙刷擦均勻,皮的色澤當下光潔亮麗。
3. 美術用。把牙刷醮上顏料,往細孔鐵線網上擦,會形成美麗的刷色畫。
4. 梳刷竉物的皮毛,有按摩作用,不過一般人會使用竉物專用的梳毛刷。
5. 掃眉,不過一般的眉筆都附有眉刷。
6. 烹調做菜時用,如在酥皮上掃油,不過一般的廚房都會用鬆潻的掃帚架喎。
7. 清洗衣物上的小污漬,噴上清潔劑後,再在污漬上清刷一下,加強清潔效果。
8. 清潔模型或figure玩具,不過用毛巾布清潔更為方便。
註: 除了頭三項外,其他都有些牽強。
