Doctor 和 Master 都是 Gallifrey 星球的時間族人 (Time Lord)。Master 是Doctor 的敵人，亦是 Doctor Who 的另一經典奸角。
Master 曾經是 Doctor 的同學，他認為 Master 是在八歲望向時間漩渦時「go mad」了。Gallifrey 星人在八歲時都要望向時間漩渦，作為進入時間族學院 (Time Lord Academy) 的儀式。Doctor 說有些人會得到啟示，有些人會跑開（如他），有些人會瘋了（如 Master）。
Master 的目的是想控制宇宙，可能因此 Doctor 便要設法阻止吧。
