Provided you can achieve very good grades no matter which major you pick, for money, it must be business and focusing on Finance and going to work in investment bank front end roles. You can earn quite a lot and share fat bonus (can be more than 1 year base salary) in good days.

For solicitor route, you should target to those Corporate Finance team of big Anglo-American law firms, which you may earn $40K+ as trainee and $60K 2-3yrs PQE. However, international law firms like Magic Circle, Allen & Overy, Freshfield, Jones Day, Richard Bulters, Clifford Chance...... They each recruit about 10 trainees into different streams of business, perhaps 1 to 3 people in their corporate finance team. Out of the 10, only 1 or 2 may be from HKU. The others are from FAMOUS OVERSEAS U, like Oxbridge, Harvard, Columbia of US...

These people have 1st class honor (top 7 to 10% a MUST) in law major and/or double degree, with international exposure. Alternatively, good family connections work, i.e. your parents are chairman of listed companies or with senior Communist Party leader backgound.

If you do not possess these qualities above... don't dream of having a bright job in law arena, given the saturated market...

For barrister route, if your mother tongue is English or near English and you are a borne advocate, you should be able to earn big bucks. However, it may take you few years before your business get on track. As barrister, there is no fixed income and you have to pay the chamber fees.

All the above routes are very competitive and the work life is not as rosy as you think. No matter which of these fields, you have to work heavy extended hours and under tremendous pressure. Most of the people in these fields say they basically have no life other than work. In the good days, you can earn money fast, but in the bad days, these fields are the first to shrink and lay people off.

Remember, we only talk about the best cases here. If you can get to the small and medium size Chinese firms, solicitors are just another typical SME job in Hong Kong earning BELOW average salary with LONG working hours.

Or, another choice is to take Business first and then take Law as second degree, which is also a feasible route.
