Depend on what role of your server.

1. If you just want to make it as a web server, you can go for a Windows 2003 Web edition.

2. If you want to make it as a file server, user authentication server, you need either Windows 2003 Standard edition or Windows 2003 Enterprise edition.

3. During installation, Windows 2003 will ask you, what is the server role of this server, then you pick one, then Windows 2003 will install all necessary components and files based on your selection.

4. To install a Windows server is not difficult, the challenge is that you have to maintain it all the time, such as apply all security patches, hot fix, etc.

5. A new Windows server (Windows 2008) will be launched soon, late this year or 1st quarter of 2008. I saw their technet road map seminar in May this year in Vancouver, it has some improvement than Windows 2003.
