1) Scotland is huge, 3 days could only visit one of the cities in Scotland indeed, and there are some big cities in Scotland, such as Edinburge, Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, Glasgow...etc.
2) Yes, you can take the train or bus in Scotland, but can't answer you how much for that as it is very dependent on which route do you take. For the bus, normally costs you 1 to 3 pounds. And the train would be a bit expensive during the Summer (as there is peak season now).
3) If you are traveling on your own, I would suggest you stay in the guest house, there are quite popular in Scotland, you can search for the guest houses on the Internet. (normally around 25-35 pounds for a single room, and some with breakfast, but have to check the availabilities first, again, July and August are peak season for visiting Scotland.)
4) There are so many different tourist attractions and beautiful places in Scoltand, such as if you visit Edingburgh (the capital city of Scotland), you must visit the Edinburgh Castle, Princes Street...etc. If you just do the sightseeing within the city centre then it's ok to walk, but actually sometimes you still have to take the bus as the distance is not as close as England.
5) Again, Scotland is huge, can't just spend 3 days to see all, such as Loch Ness is popular (in Inverness), and some castles in Scoltand are beautiful but located at different cities...
