Adverse effects
Common adverse drug reactions (≥1% of patients) associated with systemic metronidazole therapy include: nausea, diarrhea, and/or metallic taste. Intravenous administration is commonly associated with thrombophlebitis. Infrequent adverse effects include: hypersensitivity reactions (rash, itch, flushing, fever), headache, dizziness, vomiting, glossitis, stomatitis, dark urine, and/or paraesthesia.[1]

High doses and/or long-term systemic treatment with metronidazole is associated with the development of furry black tongue, leukopenia, neutropenia, increased risk of peripheral neuropathy and/or CNS toxicity.[1]

Metronidazole is listed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a potential human carcinogen. Although some of the testing methods have been questioned, it has been shown to cause cancer in experimental animals.[4] Nevertheless, it appears to have a fairly low potential for cancer risk and under most circumstances the benefits of treatment outweighs the risk.

Common adverse drug reactions associated with topical metronidazole therapy include local redness, dryness, and/or skin irritation; and eye watering (if applied near eyes).[1]

常見副作用(口服劑型)： 口乾、味覺改變、肚瀉、降低食慾、噁心、嘔吐、頭痛、頭暈目眩等。 注意事項(口服劑型)： 本藥空腹或與食物一起服用均可，為了增強藥物的吸收，本藥最好能在空腹時服用。如服後腸胃感不適，則可飽肚服藥。 服用此藥時，必須依照醫生的指示，完成整個療程，即使覺得感染的症狀已經完全消除，仍須服完所有處方的份量，以免感染復發，或令細菌產生抗藥性。 此藥可導致小便變成深褐色，但無需擔心。

相互作用: 與酒精類飲料併用可使身體產生許多嚴重的不良反應，如噁心、嘔吐、腹部抽痛、頭痛、心跳加速以及臉部潮紅等。飲用的酒量愈大，產生此副作用的機會及程度就愈高，故建議在服藥期間及停藥後72小時內避免喝酒。 懷孕期安全性分級： B (懷孕期第一期避免使用)

如果一日之內 服食多於 24粒 Metronidazole tablet 200 mg 會唔會有事 , 會唔會死 ? 可能會死架。"與酒精類飲料併用可使身體產生許多嚴重的不良反應，如噁心、嘔吐、腹部抽痛、頭痛、心跳加速....." 淨「心跳加速」都可能會死人。
