What is bus?

A bus is a large road vehicle designed to carry numerous passengers in addition to the driver and sometimes a conductor. The name is a neologic version of the Latin omnibus, which means "for everyone."

What is bus?

(1) A bus is a network topology or circuit arrangement in which all devices are attached to a line directly and all signals pass through each of the devices. Each device has a unique identity and can recognize those signals intended for it.

(2) In a computer, a bus is the data path on the computer's motherboard that interconnects the microprocessor with attachments to the motherboard in expansion slots (such as hard disk drives, CD-ROM drives, and graphics adapters).

車廂分為兩層，載客量更大。一般而言，一輛車長10米並容許企位的單層巴士可運載約60名乘客，而長度相近的雙層巴士則能運載約130名乘客。

倫敦、香港、新加坡、柏林、孟買等城市均大量採用雙層巴士。其中，自1950年代起於倫敦服務的Routemaster車款更成為該市的地標（因應歐盟要求歐洲各國的巴士在2016年後必須全數是超低地台巴士以方便老弱人士，於2005年年尾全數退役）。

有些雙層巴士的上層不設車頂，供遊客登上作瀏覽沿途景色，稱為開篷巴士。

香港亦有開篷巴士為接駁山頂纜車站至中環的服務。

台灣的臺北市公車處曾購買過雙層巴士，後因車輛高度以及車輛其他問題而不再添購、使用。

型巴士（簡稱小巴）的體積比普通巴士為小，載客量一般在8至20人之間。它們多數行走於客量較低或需要服務偏遠、彎多、路窄地區的路線。有些路線亦會使用小巴以提供頻密的班次。在營運上，大部份地區的小型巴士與普通巴士沒有分別。但在某些城市如香港，公共小型巴士的營運制度是獨立於普通巴士之外。（參見：香港交通）

為了與小巴區別，一般公共汽車也有被稱為大巴的。

亦有載客量約30至40人的公共汽車，較小巴為大但小於大巴，一般稱為中型巴士。在中國大陸，人們通常使用中巴的簡稱來稱呼中型巴士；但香港並未對中型及大型巴士加以區別，而中巴的簡稱亦一般用來稱呼曾於香港營辦大巴服務的中華巴士。

校巴士（簡稱校巴或校車）是用以接載學童往返学校的巴士。

一般而言，巴士及提供校巴服務。可以由政府營運或經由合約交予經營商來營運。例如在纽西兰，巴士也要提供校巴服務，在上、下课时间挂上校巴的牌。在某些地方亦有學校本身擁有巴士及提供校巴服務。在美國的校車大多是黃色的。

巴士快速交通是一種新型大容量快速交通方式，高載客量的巴士在專用道上行走，並在特定的站點設立專用站台。這系統既結合了巴士的靈活性、低投資成本、短興建時間來達到軌道交通的高運載力特點。現時北京及杭州已設立巴士快速交通，在台灣，為了接駁台灣高鐵嘉義站，所以在嘉義施行巴士快速交通。
