After double-clicked the C: icon, cannot open files in harddisk directly, a pop-up screen shows instead, asking to choose any appropriate softwares to open. How to solve / recover?
P.S. Use File Explorer to browse the files is okay.

Your C: icon definitely has problem.Discard it (delete it) and make another new shortcut.
On your desktop, right-click any space,
then choose 〔新增(W)〕、〔捷徑(S)〕，
in〔輸入項目的位置(T)〕of the 〔建立捷徑〕dialogue box,
type C:\，〔下一步(N)〕，
then in 〔輸入這個捷徑的名稱(T)〕of the 〔選擇程式標題〕dialogue box,
type C Drive ， 〔完成〕，

Have you tried to switch off your pc and switch it back on after couple minutes. It may cure it without any effort. Try it first before you do anything.
