1) No, even though you are taking the trains by all different rail companies in the U.K., there are all same, have no difference, just make sure you are waiting at the right platform and right time. When the train just approached the platform, you can re-confirm with the ticket control staffs or any staffs at the train if you are uncertain.
2) You don't need to "check-in" when you are taking the train. You just have to make sure you have got the valid ticket in hand and jump into the train, and the ticket control staff will check your ticket in the train.
3) The Fast Ticket Machine is very user friendly, don't worry about it. If you paid by credit/debit card when you purchase your tickets, then you just need to press "Collect" and insert your credit/debit card then it will print all tickets and receipt out at the same time. Then collect your card, tickets and receipt.
4 & 5) Some trains in the U.K. you can make the reservation of the seats, some don't. If your ticket marked this term, then it means you can book a seat, it just means it secure your seat, such as C51, then you have the right to seat at C51 and guaranteed you have got a seat, as sometimes during the peak season, even though you have got a ticket but didn't make any reservation for any seats, then you are only guaranteed that you are allowed to take this train but NOT guarantee that you have got a seat. If the train is really full, in this case, if you haven't reserve yourself a seat, you may have to stand all the way. Anyway, if the train is not full or the seats haven't been booked by someone, then you can sit on any seats you like. You can simply check if they have put a card on the chair and marked "Reserved" it means this seat is occupied.
6) The rail company don't need to take any responsibility if you didn't reserve any seats in advanced but you don't get a seat finally, as the ticket only guarantee that you are allow to take this train. In order to secure your seat, I'd suggest you make the resevation in advanced.
