in the experiment of alcoholic fermentation, we place 5%glucose solution and living yeast together covered with a oil layer for two days.

how would the rate of release of bubble be affected if a 20% glucose solution were used instead of the 5% glucose solution?

the answer suggested that the rate was zero throughtout the time.

why? give explanations please.!!~

1.As the water potential of 20% glucose solution is lower than the yeast, water moves out from the yeast cells.
2.therefore, the yeast cells become flaccid and plasmolysed. Finally, the yeasts die of dehydration.
3 the rate was zero because there is no yeast to carry out anaerobic respiration to produce carbon dioxide.

Yeasts are plasmolyzed (胞漿收縮)under 20% glucose solution -> dead -> ∴rate=0
