nervous dog in the car?

your dog should be placed in a crate which has a blanket or a pillow... driving with him makes him stressful physically and emotionally... place him into something where he could be secure... never shout at him nor frighten him with a stick will only make him nuts... all what he needs is comfort... you may also talk to him patiently but never to shout at him...

The nervous or scared behavior is more common in small breeds and in the dogs that were isolated when they were young, but there are many other cases in which different causes have produced fear of noises, such as false explosions of the engine of a car or fireworks!! I know its harsh but the worst thing you could do in this situation is to comfort him/her! it will make the situation worse.
It my be worth taking your dog in the car when its not moving then when shes calm give her a treat and reward her for being calm. then sit in the drive with the engine on and don't go anywhere when he/shes calm reward her/him. its all done in stages. If your dog has a fear of the car this may be that they have not be socialized the the car as a puppy it could also be that she thinks its taking her/him to bad places such as the vets!!! try take your dog for a small trip get out and walk around the park then go home that way he/she will associate the car with good things and treats if he/she is calm. Good luck, it does take patients much as everything else with animals! Just remember everything is done in stages and built up! hope this helps :)

buy a crate, and use it when you travel. it's safer for you and the dog. it actually calms mine down. and it prevents him from climbing into my lap, which is NOT safe.

try to create her? do you create her at home? maybe she would like to be in a create in the car, my dog like his create in the car on long trips i guess he feels safer in the create.

put her in your arms and pat and stroke her,and talk to her in a soothing voice,sooner or later she will get use to it.

We had same problem,so I threatened him with a stick.Not that I would ever use it but after a couple of short trips it worked.It was only a tomato stake,but each time we would take them in the car the stick would come with us.
