If just only 1 week.. i suggest u go to Auckland (biggest city in NZ) -> rotorua (volcano n Maori villages) -> Willington (political capital city, Te Papa museum) -> Nelson (rich art, view n nice wine farm) -> Christchurch (largest city in South island) If you have time you can go to Dunedin, have oldest univesity in NZ
If you planning to stay 1 week in South island, you can choose: Christchurch -> Dunedin -> Queenstown -> Franz Jose -> Nelson -> Christchurch
In New Zealand, Auckland, Willington n Christchurch have direct flight from HK. Also you can ask your travel agent make the arrive and depart different city, so can save 1 way ticket.
When you arrive NZ, go to information center. They normally open 8am -6pm. Tell them how much u want to spend for the accommodation. North Island, backpackers (double bed rm) about NZ$80-$100 per night. South Island. backpacker (double bed rm) about NZ$55- $80 per night. NZ's information center is nationalwide.. you can book all your tour, accommodation, transport in there.. Also go to local information center to get more detail for that town/ city.
For me Queenstown's "remarkable" and Nelson's sunset are super amazing scenic!!!
You can join some half day tour in queenstown for "lord of the ring" sight tour. 1 of the place/view is call remarkable.
Join a afternoon wine tour in nelson, taste their good wine n enjoy the sunset
