During a typhoon, the energy carried by water waves from the sea can cause great damage. Where does the energy come from?

The wave raises the water particles, so the water level increases. While the water raises, it gains potential energy. Water particles are unstable in high level, so it will fall down again. During the falling process, potential energy changes to kinetic energy. If the water collites with a building, it would damage that building.

The energy of the water waves come from the hurrican force wind of the typhoon. Uusually, damage on-shore is not caused by the waves, but by storm surge (風暴潮).
