(A) The District Profile





(1)


The Southern District covers an area of about 4,000 hectares, larger than any of the 3 other districts on Hong Kong Island;




(2)


Pok Fu Lam Village near Chi Fu Fa Yuen is one of the oldest villages on Hong Kong Island and according to the villagers, its history can be traced back to more than 200 years ago;




(3)


Alongside the shore of Telegraph Bay in Pok Fu Lam, i.e. the location of the Cyberport, is the place where Bauhinia was first discovered. There is a Bauhinia garden inside the Cyberport to commemorate the event;




(4)


The Southern District has more famous bathing beaches than the other 3 districts on the Island;




(5)


The reputed restaurant extensively renowned for its delicious 'fish balls' and noodle is located in the Southern District;

There are many rehabilitation facilities in the district and they tend to concentrate in Sha Wan Drive, Wong Chuk Hang and Chung Hom Kok, including 5 special schools, 9 child care hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, nursing homes and infirmaries;

Cyberport -- Hong Kong's IT Flagship which covers an area of about 24hectares, is situated in Telegraph Bay, Pokfulam;

The district has a wide variety of schools, namely primary schools (24), secondary schools (17), prevocational schools (2), Chinese cookery institution (1), special schools (3) and international schools (3).

There are 9 public housing estates in the district, accommodating about 113,000 people.



(B) Area and Population of the Southern District

The Southern District is located in the southern part of Hong Kong Island with Big Wave Bay to the east, Pok Fu Lam to the west. It faces the Pacific Ocean and, with an area of about 4000 hectares, covers nearly half of the Island's area in which Shek O, Tai Tam, Stanley, Chung Hom Kok, Repulse Bay, Wong Chuk Hang, Aberdeen and Ap Lei Chau are all included. The district has a population of 290,000.
