C&B = Compensation (薪酬) & Benefits (福利)

COMPENSATION not only includes monthly payroll and annual tax return. If you work for a company with more than 100 employees, it is easier to use an HR information system to maintain all staff records and prepare the payroll. Then you have to administer the system. Secondly, compensation includes job evaluation. This is a complicated process used to determine the relative size of each job, the job grades and pay scale. Thirdly, compensation also includes salary survey. Large organisations always want to know how competitive their salary levels are in the market. Therefore, they take part in a salary survey before they decide on any salary adjustment for their own staff. Lastly, there is the performance appraisal system. In the past, when the economy was good, you might give a constant salary increment to the good performers and you might give an above average increment to the above average performers. However, the present economy is not as good as the past. Some organisations are not able to increase the salary of its staff according to their performance. They might consider paying the good performers a bonus instead of adjusting the salary of every one. Then you need to keep a record of this kind of salary adjustment or bonus payment.

BENEFITS refer to the administration of staff benefits. HR has to keep a record of all staff benefits, e.g. annual leave, statutory holidays, sick leave, maternity leave, 13th month salary, Mandatory Provident Fund, medical, dental, housing allowance, and so forth. However, it is not sufficient to just keep a record of these. In order to keep them competitive and attractive, you also need to regularly review the benefits schemes and choose the most suitable service provider.
