Hydrogen in most of its compounds has an oxidation number +1, but the oxidation number of hydrogen is -1 in metallic hydrides. Then, what is metallic hydrides?

metallic hydride is a source to provide hydride (H-) ion as a reducing agent.
the common metallic hydride used in organic chemistry is sodium boron hydride [NaBH4] and lithium aluminium hydride [LiAlH4]
they provide hydride ion as nucleophile during reduction
the ease of releasing hydride ion determine the reducing properties of the metallic hydride
eg) NaBH4 and LiAlH4 are both able to reduce aldehyde and ketone to the relative alcohol but NaBH4 cann't reduce ester and carboxylic acid while LiAlH4 does.

(1) Only gave answer on hydrido complexes, but not metallic hydrides.
(2) Sodium boron hydride is usually NOT classified as metallic hydrides.

Metallic hydrides are the compounds that formed between hydrogen and metals. The common metal hydrides include KH, NaH, CaH2, AlH3, LiAlH4, etc.
