metallic hydride is a source to provide hydride (H-) ion as a reducing agent.
the common metallic hydride used in organic chemistry is sodium boron hydride [NaBH4] and lithium aluminium hydride [LiAlH4]
they provide hydride ion as nucleophile during reduction
the ease of releasing hydride ion determine the reducing properties of the metallic hydride
eg) NaBH4 and LiAlH4 are both able to reduce aldehyde and ketone to the relative alcohol but NaBH4 cann't reduce ester and carboxylic acid while LiAlH4 does.
