The House of Windsor

The official family title of Queen Elizabeth II is the House of Windsor. The original family title was the House of Sax-Coburg-Gotha. This German name stems from Queen Victoria’s marriage in 1840 to Prince Albert, son of Duke Ernst I of Sax-Coburg-Gotha. During World War I, anti-German sentiment in the United Kingdom led King George V to adopt the English name of Windsor for the royal family.

The change of name, however, only referred to male descendents of the family, and not necessarily to female descendents. In 1952, two months after her ascendancy to the Throne, Queen Elizabeth II ended the confusion by declaring that her immediate family and descendents (male and female alike) would be known by the family name House of Windsor.

Following a 1960 declaration by Queen Elizabeth II, the surname Mountbatten-Windsor came into common usage by some members of the Royal Family. “Mountbatten” is the family name of Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. However, the official name of the Royal Family remains the House of Windsor.
