耳垢是外耳道內部內垢腺體分泌的蠟狀物質和外耳道皮膚混合後的產物。

一般所知耳垢可分為乾性和濕性。濕性耳垢屬於顯性遺傳、相反地，乾性耳垢則是隱性遺傳。同時因為腺體分泌較旺盛的關係，濕性耳垢體質的人比較容易有體臭。

中國人濕性耳垢約占人口數的百分之四至百分之七。然而大洋洲的原住民有百分之六、七十。高加索人(白人)高達百分之九十。黑人則有百分之九十九點五的人口是濕性耳垢。

2006年1月29日、長崎大學的研究論文表示，耳垢的乾濕性是由DNA排裂的一個位置所決定的。而且這篇論文中進一闡明並沒有「乾性耳垢」，乾性耳垢的人事實上是失天根本缺乏製造耳垢的機制，所謂的乾性耳垢只是耳道的外皮代謝脫落的產物。
