Go to the pound and find one that is calm but perky and seems like a good dog. Purebreeds are great, but there are so many dogs out there that need a good home. Many puppies are there because the dogs bred without the owners' knowledge or permission, and they are good dogs. I prefer mutts, myself, though I've owned both; sometimes shelters even have purebreds that someone simply got tired of. Be careful not to buy puppies from "puppy mills"--if you do decide to buy a purebred, check your source. Puppy mills are cruel; they breed dogs en masse for money, and the pups are often inbred, have birth defects, are mean, etc. Get a dog from a reputable breeder, or from the humane society. Often no-kill shelters will place a pup, and tell you all you need to know about it, too. A good place to start would be
www.bestfriends.com: they are a no-kill in AZ, but they can doubtless help you find a shelter in your area. Good luck! Just don't grab the first cute fuzzy thing you see. Do your homework. :)
P.S.--Local newspapers also often have "free puppies" ads; just make sure the pups are a compatible breed with your lifestyle, meet the parents (both, if you can), and be sure that the pups are healthy and have shots and worming before you get them permanently settled in. Vets sometimes have pups, too, often free to good homes.
