名詞是不可數名詞，通常無複數形，亦不加冠詞a, an或one等，表示總稱時，不加the。
食品、飲料的名稱：food(食物), meat(肉), fish(魚), rice(米), wheat(小麥), flour(麵粉), bread(麵包), butter(奶油), fruit(水果), sugar(糖), salt(鹽), milk(牛奶), tea(茶), coffee(咖啡), wine(酒), beer(啤酒)water(水), …等。


表「數量」時，須在物質名詞前另加「計量單位」，其形式為﹝冠詞或數詞+計量名詞+of+物質名詞﹞，如：a glass (two glasses) of(一杯，兩杯~), a cup (two cups) of(一杯，兩杯~), a bottle (two bottles) of(一瓶，兩瓶~), a piece (two pieces) of(一片〈枝，塊〉，兩片〈枝，塊〉~), a slice(two slices) of(一片，兩片~),a bit (two bits)of(一小片，兩小片) a loaf (two loaves) of(一大塊，兩大塊~), a sheet (two sheets) of(一張，兩張~), a pound (two pounds) of(一磅，兩磅~), a ton( two tons) of(一噸，兩噸~), a cake (two cakes) of(一塊，兩塊~), a bowl (two bowls) of(一碗，兩碗~), a bag (two bags) of(一袋，兩袋~), a bar (two bars) of(一條，兩條~)……等。
物質名詞特有所指時，其前須加定冠詞the。
