屬軟體動物頭足類，是烏賊的一種，體圓錐形，體色蒼白，有淡褐色斑，頭大，前方生有觸足十條，尾端的肉鰭呈三角形，常成群游於深約2O公尺的海洋。
魷魚的外形較墨魚纖瘦，體長亦較短。魷魚胴體呈圓筒形，長二十五公分以上，尾端之鰭較短、寬，呈短菱形。眼晴直接暴露，沒有薄膜蓋著。
食味方面，魷魚較墨魚肉薄且質腍。
