Silver nitrate is used to test for the presence of chloride ions. It has to be acidified by excess dilute nitric acid to prevent the formation of other precipitates (e.g. silver carbonate, silver sulphite) which will be soluble in dilute nitric acid. This step can ensure an accurate result.
