HDMI - High Density Multimedia Interface - is a medium of transmission of digital signal (including video and audio) from one source to another. With the evolution over the years, HDMI can transmit larger and larger volume of data, which can give you the theatre like movies effect. It can also meet the requirement of SACD, Blu-ray Discs and HD DVD which can store a lot of data. Because of its advance technology, the output of video and sound can be more stable and better in quality, when comparing with traditional medium of transmission like Composite, S-video, Component, Coaxial and Optical transmission.

However, as it is just a medium of transmission, we cannot compare it with the TV picture. It really depends on what source of signal you are giving to it.
